Bank / Art

BofA by Miller & Steiner, San Mateo, and Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, 1963 - San Mateo
Mosaic designed by Louis Macouillard and executed by Alphanso Pardinas. It's a tribute to Bank of America (formerly
Bank of Italy) founder A.P. Giannini and represents the bank’s history. Giannini lived in San Mateo most of his life.

The work is reminiscent of the Millard Sheets murals for Home Savings.
Hence, it's no surprise that Macouillard was a colleague of Sheets in the California Watercolor Society.

This was back when banks weren't crap stucco boxes in strip malls and grocery stores.
Quality art and architecture was used to express the quality of the institutions.
